Welcome to Happyness Hypothesis, a weekly newsletter where I provide actionable ideas to help you build a healthy, wealthy, and happy life.
The Relationship Handbook by George Pransky (a licensed marriage counselor with 25+ years of experience) is a simple guide to satisfying relationships.
“Emotions are never a statement about the world around us. They are always a statement about our momentary perspective on life.”
Emotions are just temporary indulgences sidelined in the face of important matters.
Picture this.
You are arguing with your partner. You feel angry and upset. Suddenly, the fire alarm goes off. There is a fire in the building. You hurry to put out the fire.
Are you still angry? Of course not. You need to focus entirely on putting out the fire.
When the fire is put out, does your anger return? Probably not. You are grateful that no one got hurt.
If you can forget emotions during emergencies, can they be set aside anytime? Absolutely. They are only illusions.
Actionable takeaway: when upset or unhappy, don’t argue (or make important decisions). Wait for the unpleasant mood to pass.
